Great Britain's desire to supply tanks to Ukraine is a "headache" for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. However, his position is highly dependent on US President Joe Biden.
This is reported by Politico.
According to press secretary Scholtz, London's plans to supply Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine will not change the position of the German government, which has not yet dared to hand over Leopard tanks to Kyiv.
Two German sources noted that the position of the German chancellor is highly dependent on US President Joe Biden, with whom Scholz closely coordinated his actions when deciding on the transfer of German Marder BMPs to Ukraine.
Earlier, the German chancellor emphasized the importance of discussing arms with the US president, saying that sending tanks to Ukraine should be discussed "together with friends and allies, and especially with the transatlantic partner, the United States of America."
Nevertheless, the publication notes that the supply of British equipment will increase the pressure on Scholz, as Great Britain will be the first country to take this step.
Politico also explains that Polish President Andrzej Duda's proposal to supply Leopard to Kyiv as part of an international coalition may face a problem. A major obstacle to these deliveries is that Berlin has to approve the re-export of German-made weapons.
