The court in Strasbourg made a decision in the case of the occupation of Donbas, which will be announced on January 25

The European Court of Human Rights has issued a decision in a major case on the occupation of Donbas and will announce it on January 25.

Margarita Sokorenko, Commissioner for ECHR affairs, reported this.

"We open (already by tradition) the new year at the ECtHR... with a decision on the admissibility of the interstate case "Ukraine and the Netherlands v. Russia," Sokorenko announced on her Facebook page.

According to her, on January 25, 2023, the ECtHR will publicly announce the decision in the so-called Donbas case - the first case regarding the seizure of eastern Ukraine in 2014, when Russia launched a war against Ukraine from Crimea and Donbas.

The court's recognition of the admissibility of the case will mean that the court recognizes Russia's control over Donbas and determines the temporal and territorial boundaries of the occupation. This decision of the ECtHR will be an argument for other court processes. Read more about the significance of the ECtHR's decision in the article: Donbas follows Crimea. The ECtHR passed the first decision against the Russian Federation on the occupation of eastern Ukraine.

The case "Ukraine and the Netherlands v. Russia" according to applications No. 8019/16, 43800/14, 28525/20 concerns the administrative practice of violations of human rights by Russia in the temporarily occupied territory of Donetsk and Luhansk regions since 2014, including the beating of the Malaysian Year. reminded Sokorenko.

She emphasized that as a lawyer who has been handling this case since 2014 and knows how much effort has been put in, she can claim that the ECtHR will proceed to consider the case on its merits.

"This will be another international legal nail in the coffin of the Russian invaders. And this is only the beginning of the year," Sokorenko said.

At the hearings at the ECtHR in the framework of the case "Ukraine and the Netherlands v. Russia", the Ukrainian side proves that the occupation of Donbas began in April 2014.
