French President Emmanuel Macron met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the G20 summit and, among other things, asked him to convince Russian President Vladimir Putin to consider real negotiations with Ukraine to end the war.
As BFMTV informs, this was reported in the Elysee Palace.
"Emmanuel Macron asked China to help deliver signals to President Putin in order to prevent de-escalation and return to the negotiating table with serious intentions," the Elysee Palace said.
In a communiqué published on the Elysee Palace website, Macron expressed deep concern about Russia's intentions to continue the war against Ukraine and its global implications, and said that close coordination between Paris and Beijing is needed to overcome these challenges.
"Both leaders confirmed their respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine and agree on the need for de-escalation as soon as possible. They confirmed their firm position on preventing the use of nuclear weapons. President Xi expressed his support for the initiatives of the French president to achieve peace," the text emphasizes.
It was also reported that Macron is ready to visit China in early 2023. This was his first meeting with Xi Jinping since November 2019.
