The European Parliament approved the agreements of the European Union with Ukraine and Moldova on the simplification of cross-border transportation of goods.
This is stated in a statement on the website of the parliament.
The two new agreements on road transport are part of the EU's response to disruptions in the transport sectors of Ukraine and Moldova caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
"Since Ukrainian airspace has been closed to civilian traffic and sea exports are very limited, Ukraine needs to find alternative road transport routes to export its stockpiles of grain, fuel, food and other relevant goods. Also suffering is Moldova, which needs alternative transit routes through the EU and assistance in the transit of Ukrainian goods through its territory," the statement reads.
The agreements will replace existing bilateral transport agreements with EU countries. They temporarily facilitate road freight transport by allowing carriers of Ukraine, Moldova and the EU to transit through each other's territory and operate between them without the appropriate permits.
In addition, the agreement between Ukraine and the EU will allow Ukrainian drivers to continue to use their existing Ukrainian driver's licenses and certificates of professional competence to drive in the EU without the need for an international driver's license.
Both agreements are provisionally effective from June 29, 2022. After the decision of the parliament, the agreements also require official approval by the Council of the EU.
