The Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to the statement of Italian Senator Massimiliano Romeo about the need for the international community to participate in deciding the future of Ukraine, stating that the spread of Russian narratives encourages Russia to commit further crimes in Ukraine.
This was stated by the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Oleg Nikolenko.
He noted that the Italian senator's statement reflects his personal opinion, as Prime Minister Georgia Maloney clearly articulated Italy's position: both the need to continue supporting Ukraine against the background of Russian aggression, and the unconditional right of Ukrainians to determine their future.
"In almost every country, there will be politicians who will try to please Putin. At the same time, they should realize that by spreading Russian narratives, they are encouraging Russia to continue its crimes against Ukraine," said the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"But without peace in Ukraine, there will be no peace in Europe. That's why Italian senators should be interested in the victory of the Ukrainians, if they really care about the interests of their country," he added.
We will remind, the Italian senator from the "League" party Massimiliano Romeo believes that Ukrainians should not make all decisions about their future independently, the international community should play a certain role in this, taking into account the interests of the country.
In particular, he asked Maloney to insist on holding an international conference on defense and security issues in Europe, so that Italy would be able to "determine the international geopolitical scenario" and not join unconditional support for Ukraine.
It should be noted that it was Massimiliano Romeo who previously submitted a request to the parliament to recognize Crimea as Russian.
