Permanent Representative of Poland to the EU Andrzej Sados expects that on Tuesday the EU ambassadors will start the formal procedure of adopting the eighth package of sanctions against Russia.
This was reported by "Polish Radio".
"The European Commission has prepared a new, updated package of sanctions proposals. Currently, we have a kind of silence procedure. The capitals of the participating states have until tomorrow at 10 o'clock in the morning to confirm that the problematic provisions, which still needed to be finalized, have been adopted. Tomorrow (Tuesday. -) Ed.) in the afternoon we are already starting the formal procedure of adopting the sanctions package," he said on Monday after the ambassadors' meeting.
He noted that, in his opinion, an agreement will be reached, stressing that Poland's proposals were, however, much more ambitious.
"However, this is the case with every package of sanctions. Time is important, and it is important to maintain unity, as well as a certain level of ambition. In my opinion, this is a good package, in particular, because of the introduction of a legal criterion to prevent the circumvention of sanctions," he said.
As reported, the ambassadors of the European Union countries did not reach an agreement on the eighth package of sanctions against the Russian Federation at a meeting in Brussels on Monday.
Last week, the European Commission proposed new sanctions against Russia, including tough trade restrictions and oil price caps for third countries.
