Military registration for women was postponed for a year

The Ministry of Defense has postponed the registration of women in the military until October 1, 2023. The corresponding decree was signed by the head of the department Oleksiy Reznikov.

Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine Hanna Malyar reported this on Telegram.

She emphasized that there are no bans on women traveling abroad from October 1.

"At the same time, realizing that the law-making process is long, in parallel, the Ministry of Defense, within the limits of its powers, prepared an order, which once again postponed the deadline for taking women of relevant professions/specialties for military registration for another year - until October 1, 2023. The corresponding order yesterday, September 6, signed by the Minister of Defense Oleksiy Reznikov," Malyar wrote.

At the same time, she reminded that the norm regarding the mandatory registration of women of relevant professions/specialties on military registration is regulated by law.

"This order does not change the norms of the current legislation, but it will allow the committee, and then the parliament in general, to finalize and make changes to the legislation in order to regulate this issue," Malyar explained.

Therefore, as deputy Reznikova noted, the Ministry of Defense can only postpone the deadline within its powers.

"Therefore, they have been postponed for another year - until October 1, 2023, and during this time the parliamentarians will be able to establish at the legislative level that the military registration of women of the relevant professions/specialties is exclusively voluntary," said Malyar.

According to her, work in the committee of the Verkhovna Rada is actively continuing, but after the adoption of relevant changes to the legislation on the voluntary inclusion of women in the military register, there will no longer be a need to postpone the deadlines again and again by the orders of the Ministry of Defense.

"Now, the draft Law "On Amendments to Article 1 of the Law of Ukraine "On Military Debt and Military Service" is being finalized in the Parliament at the level of the specialized committee of the Verkhovna Rada," Malyar emphasized.

She also added a statement from the General Staff, which assured that the experience of deploying all military units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations to full wartime staff shows that there is no need to increase the number of women on military registration in the country today.
