On Wednesday, the Russian military began dismantling roadblocks installed along the so-called Lachin Corridor, which connects Armenia with the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, an occupied territory of Azerbaijan. This was reported by the Azerbaijani agency ARA.
On Wednesday, the dismantling of posts installed at the entrance to the Lachyn corridor and along the road from the Gubadlyna district, checkpoints, and buildings where Russian servicemen live began.
At the same time, the Russian military, who have the official status of peacekeepers in the region, will temporarily continue their service on the new corridor laid by Azerbaijan in accordance with the agreement with Armenia after the six-week war in 2020.
Azerbaijani officials say that travel through this corridor will become available in the coming week.
On Thursday, the Armenian population began to leave the city of Lachyn and the villages of Zabukh and Sus, located along the Lachyn Corridor.
We will remind you that the Lachin Corridor is the only land route that connects Armenia with Stepanakert (Khankendi), the administrative center of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. At the same time, Lachyn itself and the corridor were controlled by the Russian military.
According to the agreement reached between Armenia and Azerbaijan after the Nagorno-Karabakh war in 2020, both countries were to build roads bypassing the Lachin Corridor within three years.
Azerbaijan has already put its route into operation and, as a result, demanded Armenia to do the same, and Russia to influence Yerevan and withdraw its "peacekeepers". This eventually led to an escalation in August, when Azerbaijani forces consolidated their positions.
