The EU Council of Ministers has finally agreed a new 1bn-dollar loan for Ukraine from the macrofinancial assistance package. The funds will be used to meet urgent budget needs.
Valdis Dombrovskis, executive vice president of the European Commission, said this on Twitter.
"The EU is stepping up financial support for Ukraine: the EU Council of Ministers has just approved a loan of 1 billion euros," Dombrovskis wrote.
He stressed that this is only part of the new exceptional macrofinancial assistance package.
"Ukraine is an economy at war. It is in dire need of short-term financing. The EU is ready to help," Dombrovskis added.
As a reminder, as Corriere della Sera previously wrote, Germany is blocking the allocation of this aid to Ukraine for 9 billion euros. The FRG approved only the first tranche of 1bn, which should be paid to Ukraine by the end of July.
After which the head of the Finance Ministry Serhiy Marchenko confirmed that there is no consensus among the EU countries regarding the provision of the 9bn-euro aid package to Ukraine.
