Volodymyr Zelensky began to voice the losses suffered by the Ukrainian army in the east of the country so that Ukrainians understand the cost of Ukraine's struggle for independence. The president told this in an interview for Die Zeit .
"People should know the truth. It's about describing what war of annihilation Russia is waging against us," he replied.
Asked if he was afraid of losing the support of his people when people find out how many fighters are dying at the front and how unequal the distribution of weapons is, Zelensky replied, "We are strong. And I want the West to know how we feel when we see over and over again how the transfer of needed defensive weapons is delayed. If we had received all the modern weapons that our partners asked for, we could have saved many lives."
According to him, Ukraine will endure as long as it needs to, even despite such losses.
"The price of resistance is incredibly high. We need victory. In the war for independence and against terror, there can be no golden mean. After the mass murder, rape, torture and deportation of hundreds of thousands of people, we must do everything to protect our people and our country," he stressed.
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, Ukraine has classified information on the losses of its defense forces. Officially they will be made public after the war. On May 22, Zelensky said that 50 to 100 people were killed every day in the most difficult area in the east.
