NATO Secretary General unexpectedly cancels visit to Berlin

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg canceled a planned visit to Berlin on Thursday.

This was reported by Spiegel.

The Federal Ministry of Defense said that Stoltenberg informed him to cancel the visit as soon as possible.

The reasons for the cancellation of the visit were not known at first. NATO headquarters later clarified that the secretary general was ill and had to cancel the visit unexpectedly.

Stoltenberg was scheduled to meet with Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht in Berlin.

The meeting was to focus on preparations for the NATO summit in Madrid in late June. According to the German government, the focus should also be on the impact of Russia's war of invasion in Ukraine on the Euro-Atlantic security situation.

According to the German Defense Ministry, the agenda of the visit also planned to include strengthening of NATO's eastern flank, a new NATO strategic concept and the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO.
