NATO does not guarantee that Sweden and Finland will not have nuclear weapons

NATO cannot guarantee that Finland and Sweden will not host nuclear weapons if they are admitted to the bloc, Business Capital reported. This was stated in an interview with the Swiss broadcaster RTs by Kamij Gran, assistant secretary general of the North Atlantic Alliance.

According to him, each state has the freedom in the nuclear sphere to accept or not to accept weapons. It is not a question of imposing restrictions. Grahn added that each member country of NATO is free to decide the issue of nuclear weapons independently.

At the same time he noted that Finland and Sweden would take a "defensive position" and would not want confrontation with Russia.

Asked by a journalist whether NATO expects a military reaction or a show of force from Russia in response to Finland and Sweden joining the alliance, Gran said, "the Russians themselves have said it is not necessary, and I don't think it would be a justified step."
