Turkey will not support sanctions against the Russian Federation. However, it will not allow the Russian Federation to circumvent the restrictions through its country.
This was stated by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, quoted by Anadolu.
"As for Turkey, Ankara's position on this issue (sanctions - ed.) is clear from the beginning: we are fundamentally against any form of sanctions. Turkey says it will only support restrictions imposed only at the UN level. This is an important position. So in today's world, as we see it, each country can impose restrictions on the other. This is not only true of the Russia-Ukraine war. It was so in the past, and it may be so in the future," the minister said.
Also, Turkey is confident that only through negotiations can the war in Ukraine be ended. And Ankara is in favor of resuming the negotiation process.
According to the Turkish foreign minister, the use of weapons in the war does not have the expected effect, although certain countries were of the opinion that by supplying weapons, Ukraine could defeat Russia and turn the tide of hostilities.
"This is not happening. Neither side is making significant progress on the battlefield," he stated.
Çavuşoğlu noted that after the Istanbul meeting of the Russian and Ukrainian delegations, the dialogue slowed down, "there were well-known events in Buche and Irpen, which caused concern for Turkey too," but the sides are beginning to realize that there will be no quick victory through the use of force, in this regard, it is worth returning to diplomacy on the path of conflict resolution.
"Recently, there has been a renewed trend toward dialogue. We are also in favor of dialogue. The costs of the war, especially for Ukraine, are very high. Turkey seeks to restore face-to-face talks between Russia and Ukraine, including at the level of heads of state," Çavuşoğlu stressed.
As reported, a telephone conversation between the presidents of Ukraine and Turkey took place on May 30. The conversation between Vladimir Zelenski and Recep Tayyip Erdogan focused on different aspects of the war against Russia.
