The Russian Federation has forcibly removed to its territory almost one and a half million Ukrainian citizens, including more than 240 thousand children, said Lyudmila Denisova, the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights.

"1.4 million, including more than 240,000 children, were forcibly removed, deported by the Russian Federation to its territory," Denisova said at a "Protecting Human Rights in Times of War" discussion at the Russia War Crimes House in Davos during the World Economic Forum on Monday.

She says there is compelling evidence that Russia prepared in advance for forced deportation and expected to remove more than two million Ukrainian citizens.

"I have directives that were given by the top leadership (of the Russian Federation) to the relevant authorities to set up temporary accommodation facilities for our citizens. And we know where they are placed, how many are placed and in what conditions they are placed," Denisova said.

The ombudsman also said that the issue of the return of Ukrainian citizens forcibly deported by the Russian Federation should be resolved at the interstate level.
