Russian gas supplies to Finland stopped

Russia's Gazprom stopped exporting gas to Finland on May 21.

This was reported by the Finnish operator of the gas system, Reuters reports.

"Gas imports through the Imatra entry point have been stopped," Gasgrid Finland said in a statement. Imatra is the entry point for Russian gas into Finland.

On Friday, Gazprom warned of a supply halt on Saturday night, the Finnish state-owned gas wholesaler Gasum said.

Gasum also confirmed Saturday that supplies had stopped.

The supply of natural gas to Finland under Gasum's supply contract has been terminated," the statement said.

Gasum will henceforth supply its customers with natural gas from other sources via the BalticConnector pipeline during the upcoming summer season. The BalticConnector connects Finland with the natural gas grid of neighboring Estonia.

Most of the gas used in Finland comes from Russia, but gas accounts for only about 5 percent of annual energy consumption.

"Gazprom Export previously demanded that European countries pay for Russian gas supplies in rubles because of sanctions imposed over Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but Finland has refused to do so.
