U.S. Secretary of State: the war in Ukraine has increased poverty

U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that the war in Ukraine has exacerbated the problems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, including increased poverty. These words were spoken at the annual Conference of the Americas.

Blinken said the impact of the war was felt after the pandemic caused "tremendous economic damage throughout the region - lost jobs, lower incomes, increased poverty."

"Now that the Russian government is waging a brutal war of invasion against Ukraine, many of the earlier problems have worsened. This has caused the prices of basic commodities in the Americas, from fertilizer to wheat to oil, to skyrocket," he said.
