The Kremlin responded to U.S. President Joe Biden's statement that Vladimir Putin "can't stay in power" by saying that Russians should choose their own president.

This was reported by Reuters.

"It's not for Biden to decide. Russians elect the president of Russia," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said when asked about Biden's comments.

A White House spokesman said that Biden, who spoke in Warsaw, was not calling for "regime change" in Russia, but his point was that "Putin cannot be allowed to exercise power over his neighbors or the region."

Reuters noted that Peskov did not immediately respond to a request for a reaction to the White House clarification.

Note that Biden has intensified his personal attacks on Putin since the Russian president ordered an invasion of Ukraine last month, and the Kremlin has responded by questioning the American leader's state of mind.
