French President Emmanuel Macron has called the head of the aggressor state, Vladimir Putin, and demanded that he immediately stop the attack on Ukraine.
This was reported by the Elysee Palace.
Macron became the first Western leader to hold a phone conversation with Putin after Russia's open attack on Ukraine.
"After speaking with and consulting with the president of Ukraine, the president called Vladimir Putin and demanded an immediate end to the Russian military operation, reminding him that Russia is subjecting itself to huge sanctions," the Elysee Palace said.
The Kremlin said that Putin and Macron had a "serious and frank exchange of views on the situation around Ukraine," and that Putin gave "exhaustive explanations of the reasons and circumstances of the decision to conduct a special military operation.
As reported, the heads of state and government of the European Union decided to introduce a new package of sanctions against Russia and instructed the European Commission to prepare for possible problems with energy supplies.
