Head of Georgian Dream party: Kiev did not request Saakashvili's extradition

The Ukrainian side has not addressed Tbilisi with a request or a demand to hand over the detained former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, who is now a Ukrainian citizen, said the chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party Irakli Kobakhidze.

"Saakashvili is a headache for Ukrainians, of course, less (than for Georgia) because he does not have such a resource there - here he is an opposition leader and there he is not an opposition leader but he is a headache for them too. Because of this, Ukraine shows no interest from the Ukrainian side to ask us to hand Saakashvili over," Kobakhidze said Thursday evening on the air of the Georgian TV channel Palitranews.

At the same time, the Georgian Dream leader pointed out that Saakashvili has been "a constant source of polarization and destruction" in recent years when he led the opposition from Kiev.

"Being in jail, the country has calmed down," Kobakhidze noted.

In his opinion, the political situation in Georgia today is much calmer and less tense than it was a few months or a year ago.

"There are several reasons for this calmness and an important factor among them is the fact that Saakashvili is in jail," Kobakhidze stressed.
