Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov has said why military conscription is planned to be cancelled. The authorities want to switch to the formation of a professional army. This is reported with reference to a briefing by the head of the Defense Ministry.
According to him, the AFU consists of three categories:
The smallest is the conscription. People who, according to the old tradition, can be invited to the recruitment centers and a year and a half to serve. They are now 10% of the number of the AFU (261 thousand).
Contract servicemen - guys and girls who enter into a contract from 8 months to 3 years.
Those who serve more than 10 years.
"The idea of Zelensky's decree is that within 4 years in a quiet, planned mode, we must move to the formation of a professional army. This will give us the opportunity to give up conscription, from short-term contracts and make service in the Armed Forces an attractive, interesting profession," Reznikov said.
He said that the ministry is now working on bills.
"Starting with to start an alternative to conscription training system for young men and women of 3-3.5 months. After training, they do not go to the conscription," he specified.
Reznikov said that since 2024, Ukraine may abandon conscription at all.
"Service in the Armed Forces should be interesting, the contract must be 10 years, then it makes sense to invest in training, in the housing program, the provision of money," - he said.
