WHO urged countries not to abandon quarantine restrictions

WHO experts believe it is too early for states to remove all COVID-19 containment restrictions at once, urging caution.

"We urge caution because most countries have not passed the peak of Omicron. Vaccination rates are low in most countries, also among very vulnerable populations. So this is not the time to lift all restrictions at once," WHO technical head for COVID-19 Maria Van Kerkhove said at a briefing on Tuesday.

For his part, WHO Emergency Executive Director Mark Ryan urged countries to choose and follow their own path in dealing with COVID-19, and "not blindly follow others in loosening restrictions."

"Those countries that have decided to lift most of the restrictions also need to be confident in their ability to reintroduce measures so that people will be compliant if necessary," he added.

Earlier Tuesday, Denmark lifted all restrictions against COVID-19, becoming the first country in the European Union to lift all previous measures.

In addition, last week in England, the measures against COVID-19 were significantly relaxed. Masks and COVID passes were abolished.

According to WHO, 22 million cases of COVID-19 infection have been reported worldwide in the past week.
