A group of companies including Chevron, General Electric and other corporations are asking Congress and the president to clarify the details of sanctions against Russia to minimize losses.
"These details should include consideration of safe harbors or wind-down periods to allow companies to honor existing contracts and obligations, and - provide exemptions for life-saving medicines and other humanitarian circumstances in line with longstanding U.S. policy," Reuters quoted Jake Colvin, president of the National Foreign Trade Council.
As Colvin noted, usually when sanctions are imposed, U.S. authorities give time to wind down business, but this time the measures against Russia are expected to be imposed in the midst of a crisis.
The U.S. Treasury Department, according to Reuters, has already turned its attention to the needs of American businesses.
"We are ready to inflict serious damage on the Russian economy while minimizing unwanted side effects," the publication quoted the Treasury's official statement as saying.
