Ukraine should complete the contest to elect a new head of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAP) by the end of this year, US Charge d'Affaires in Ukraine Christina Quinn said.

"The SAP plays a critical role in bringing corrupt officials to justice and has influence over all anti-corruption cases in Ukraine. Given the importance of the independence of the SAP, we are pleased to see progress in the selection process for a new special anti-corruption prosecutor, which has occurred after significant delays," Quinn said Thursday in Kiev during the "Seven Years of Anti-Corruption Reform" conference, timed to coincide with International Anti-Corruption Day.

"We call for the completion of the process of values of the new head of the SAP without delay. We would like to see the process of appointing a new head completed by 2022," the interim attorney concluded.

The Chargé d'affaires ad interim noted that the United States supports Ukraine's work in building its anti-corruption infrastructure: it has actively participated in building Ukraine's anti-corruption infrastructure and will continue to provide assistance in this direction in the future.

"The new anti-corruption architecture has changed Ukraine. We see that civil society and those in power fighting corruption have been given new tools," she added.

Quinn also expressed hope that Ukraine would soon adopt a new anti-corruption strategy.
