Ukraine wants to freeze prices on "strategic" products

Ukraine has suggested returning permanent state control over the prices of "social" food products.

The list includes sunflower oil, sugar, bread, eggs, buckwheat and other popular products. The initiative is stated in the bill № 6374. Trade margins, i.e. sellers' margin, would be regulated.

According to the bill, it is to be not more than 15% and not less than 5% of the producer's selling price. That is, if a factory sells a kilogram of sugar at 25 UAH, its cost with the trade margin shall not exceed 28.75 UAH/kg.

Permanent state regulation of food prices in Ukraine was abolished in 2017. Then the government decided that the market should be allowed to "free float", because in this way sellers will be able to react faster to changes in the situation.
