Coal delivered by sea started to be shipped to thermal power plants

The coal imported by sea has started to be shipped to thermal power plants of the state-owned Centrenerho PJSC. The company told UNN.

On November 20, the first 60 thousand tons of coal arrived in the port "Southern" by sea. Centrenergo indicated that it plans to ensure the supply of coal by sea, "to avoid the risks of an energy blockade, which began by the Russian Federation against Ukraine."

"As of November 22, the shipment of steam coal from the port "Yuzhny" to the TPP PJSC "Centrenergo" has already begun," the company said.

At the same time it is indicated that Centrenergo "receives coal from the state mines and pays them on time and in full" and "in the first quarter and summer of this year, the company has repeatedly saved the state from fan outages." "But our own production today does not cover the need for fuel. In order to avoid a shortage of the resource and to provide the warehouses with fuel, the company began importing it," the company added.

The company chose Kazakhstan as its main supplier of imported coal. "At the peak of price increases, it was the best offer and the best value for money," Centrenergo explained.

"Centrenergo cooperated with one of the world's largest coal producers. Since mid-November 2021, Russia began unofficially restraining the transit of Kazakh coal toward Ukraine through its territory. In order to diversify coal supplies, Centrenergo PJSC signed a contract for coal delivery by sea transport. In the future, the company plans to supply coal by sea in order to avoid the risks of energy blockade by the Russian Federation, under sanctions of which the company is", - the company said.

"In addition, the company's management is negotiating with the world's leading traders and producers of coal from the United States and Australia to supply it to Ukraine," Centerenergo added.

Ukraine has failed to fulfil the plan to stockpile coal at thermal power plants to produce electricity. And earlier Russia refused to export to Ukraine coal that is used at thermal power plants to produce electricity.

Against this backdrop, Ukraine has resumed importing electricity from Belarus. It became possible to import electricity from Russia and Belarus on November 1, after months of a ban and legal red tape.
