New EU sanctions against Belarus to be approved on November 15

Heads of EU foreign ministries at a meeting on Monday are expected to examine a package of new sanctions against Alexander Lukashenko's regime, which have been approved by European ambassadors, Brussels-based correspondent Rickard Jozwiak reports. The media representative, for his part, learned this from a high-ranking EU official.

"EU foreign ministers will adopt a new package of sanctions against individuals and companies from Belarus when they meet on November 15. These are the criteria that the EU ambassadors gave the green light to on November 10," Jozwiak said.

Belarusian officials and organizations related to the migrant crisis at the Lithuanian and Polish borders are expected to fall under the sanctions. Belarusian airports, which receive migrants, as well as airlines that carry them, may also become sanctioned.

Earlier, the EU officials did not rule out the possibility of sanctioning Aeroflot.

Tougher sanctions are necessary - Lithuania and Germany have already expressed their opinion in this regard.
