UN Security Council convenes an emergency meeting because of the situation on the border between Poland and Belarus

United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency meeting because of the situation with migrants on the border between Belarus and Poland, reports RBC-Ukraine.

Michelle Bachelet, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said she was shocked by the situation, as people were forced to stay out in the cold on the border.

"I'm shocked by the fact that a large number of migrants and refugees are still in a terrible situation, with temperatures close to zero on the border of Belarus and Poland," said Bachelet.

She called on countries to take urgent action.

"I call on the states concerned to take immediate action to defuse and resolve this intolerable situation in accordance with their obligations under international human rights and refugee standards," she added.

She also called for immediate humanitarian access, access for journalists and lawyers.

"Immediate access must be granted to humanitarian organizations, as well as other members of civil society, journalists and lawyers... Several people have already died in recent months - governments in the region cannot stand idly by and allow more people to die," she insists.

As a result of these statements, Estonia, France and Ireland have called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council. It is scheduled for Nov. 11 in the afternoon.
