Expert on foreign policy of the faction of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in the German Bundestag Nils Schmid suggests involving Ukraine in solving the problem of refugees on the border of Poland and Belarus, reports Deutsche Welle.
According to the politician, an agreement could be reached with Ukraine to accept refugees while their application for asylum in the EU is pending.
"This way we can make it clear that not every refugee will automatically get into the EU," Schmid said.
At the same time, the politician, whose faction is the largest in the Bundestag, criticized Poland's treatment of migrants who try to enter the country illegally from Belarus. Schmid drew attention to reports of illegal "pushbacks" - pushing refugees from the country back to Belarus without the possibility of applying to the EU. According to the German politician, Poland should comply with international standards, in particular, provide those in need with basic humanitarian protection and the right to apply to the shelter.
