Georgian ambassador refused to meet with Denisova

Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Lyudmyla Denysova has said that Georgian Ambassador to Ukraine George Zakarashvili withdrew his proposal to hold a meeting with her because of the "political context of the statement of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry" regarding Mikheil Saakashvili and the need for further consultations with the Georgian Foreign Ministry.

"Giorgi Zakarashvili withdrew his proposal for a meeting with me "due to the political context of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry's statement on Mikhail Saakashvili and the need for further consultations with the Georgian Foreign Ministry. During this meeting, I wanted clarification on the violation of the right to life and medical care, as well as the procedural rights of a citizen of Ukraine, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the National Council of Reforms under the President of Ukraine Mikhail Saakashvili," Denisova wrote on Facebook.

Denisova called attention to the fact that the actions of Georgian authorities and Saakashvili's detention in these conditions are a violation of Articles 2 and 3 of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and Article 1 of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

According to her, the medical facility in the penitentiary institution No. 18 of Gldani did not comply with the recommendations of the consilium of doctors and due to the lack of necessary medical equipment could not provide proper resuscitation measures and treatment. This is confirmed by the Ombudsman of Georgia, Denisova said.

"Staying in this medical institution does not meet the requirements of Article 22 of the Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, therefore I demand that Mikhail Saakashvili be immediately transferred to a hospital that is equipped to provide emergency resuscitation measures and meets the standards of medical care for such patients, taking into account all recommendations of the medical board," - she noted.

Denisova also stressed that the dissemination of videos of Saakashvili's stay in a prison cell without his consent by Georgian authorities is an illegal interference with his personal right to privacy.

Denisova added that she awaits the explanations of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Georgia to Ukraine Giorgi Zakarashvili as the official representative of the Republic of Georgia regarding the facts of torture, cruel treatment and violation of fundamental rights and freedoms of Saakashvili by the Georgian authorities.
