The Ukrainian head of state urgently signed Law No. 1780-IX "On prevention of threats to national security associated with excessive influence of persons with significant economic and political weight in public life (oligarchs)," which was adopted by parliamentarians yesterday.
The main task pursued by this normative act is "to ensure the real transformation of the state in the interests of the whole society and the implementation of the strategic course of Ukraine towards European and Euro-Atlantic integration," according to the official website of the President.
"In all successful European countries there is no such branch of government as the oligarchs. States there work in the interests of their citizens, not a bunch of the richest. This is exactly the kind of change for Ukraine that our citizens voted for in 2019," said Garant.
The law separates business from politics, limits the influence of oligarchs on the development of the Ukrainian economy. Now there is a clear definition of oligarchs, whose activities and connections should be transparent.
The businessmen have to give up the former oligarchic system and the adopted law gives them half a year for this.
"Big business exists in any democratic state. But no matter how big a businessman is, he has to work according to the law and on a par with other economic subjects. If someone is used to buy politicians to allow them to circumvent the law, even the richest have to say goodbye to this habit," said Vladimir Zelensky.
The president recalled the attempt to prevent the adoption of the law under the oligarchic influence of some influential citizens.
"There was resistance. There will be even more resistance from those who have made billions from the state. But there can be no other option but to dismantle the oligarchic system. Without this, it is simply impossible to defeat poverty in Ukraine and fully join the European community", - said Vladimir Zelensky.
The law has been sent for official publication.
