"The G7 ambassadors welcome the adoption by the Verkhovna Rada of the law on the NABU and its cross-party support. This is a step forward in strengthening independent anti-corruption institutions. Transparency and competitiveness in the selection of a new director will be crucial," the ambassadors said in a statement released on Twitter on Wednesday.

As reported, on Tuesday, the Verkhovna Rada supported bill No. 5459-1 on bringing the status of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine in line with the requirements of the Constitution.

The bill changes the status of the NABU and turns it into a central executive body with a special status (currently, the NABU is a state law enforcement body). The bill also removes the provision according to which the NABU is set up by the president.

According to the proposed amendments, the work of the NABU is coordinated by the Cabinet within the limits and according to the procedure established by this law, but the government does not approve the regulation on the NABU.

The Cabinet of Ministers (the president in the current law) appoints and dismisses the NABU director.

Competitive selection for the position of NABU director shall be organized and conducted by a competitive commission consisting of six persons, three of whom shall be proposed by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and another three by the Cabinet based on proposals of international and foreign organizations, which during the last three years before the term of office of NABU director ended or before the day of early termination of his powers had provided Ukraine with international technical assistance in preventing and combating corruption.
