The United States is closely monitoring Saakashvili's condition – Ambassador

The United States is closely monitoring the condition of Georgia's third president and Reform Executive Committee chief Mikheil Saakashvili, who is on a hunger strike in a Georgian prison. This was stated by Ms. US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan.

Degnan did not assess whether Saakashvili was a political prisoner. However, she noted that his condition is being monitored by many people in Georgia, Washington and the US Embassy. The Ambassador noted that it was important to hold the second round of local elections in Georgia in calm conditions. According to her, Georgians should feel that they can make an informed choice.

«It is important that candidates address voters with their campaigns, problems, platforms … It is very important that the next few weeks are calm and there are good, favorable conditions for a good second round,» Degnan added.
