Verkhovna Rada will rename more than 300 settlements

Ukraine intends to rename more than 300 settlements whose names "contain elements of symbols of Russian imperial policy or do not meet the established standards of the state language." This is stated in draft resolution No. 11188 on the website of the Verkhovna Rada.

According to the explanatory note, local authorities were given six months to propose options for renaming settlements. In the absence of a decision on renaming by the local authorities, the recommendations of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance and the National Commission on State Language Standards will be taken into account.

The Verkhovna Rada Committee reviewed 340 renaming proposals submitted by local authorities and military administrations of the settlements, as well as recommendations from the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance and the National Commission on State Language Standards.

It is proposed to rename seven districts, fifteen cities, 54 settlements and 267 villages.

The full list of settlements to be renamed is provided in the draft resolution.
