EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has called for pressure on Russia rather than Ukraine to bring an end to the war, stressing that Europe has the strength and influence to help shape the outcome of the conflict.
Kallas made the remarks to reporters ahead of a European Council meeting on Thursday.
She said Europe’s continued support for Ukraine since the beginning of Russia’s invasion had been a key factor in preventing Moscow from achieving its objectives.
“Europe has stood by Ukraine since Russia started its war. And that is one of the reasons Russia has failed to achieve its goals,” Kallas said.
The EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy stressed that efforts to end the conflict should focus on increasing pressure on Moscow rather than Kyiv.
“To end the war, we must pressure Russia, not Ukraine,” she said.
Kallas also underscored Europe’s ability to influence developments and play a decisive role in efforts to bring the war to an end.
“Europe has the strength and influence to make a difference,” she added.
