Galushchenko: Russia seeks to organize a blackout in Ukraine, the situation is worse than in 2022-2023

The situation in Ukraine's energy system is worse than in 2022-2023. Russia wants to organize a blackout in Ukraine. This was stated by the Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Galushchenko.

“The greatest damage has been done to thermal and hydroelectric generation facilities, and transmission system facilities have been significantly damaged. The total system losses are up to 9 GW of capacity. The situation is now much worse than in 2022-2023. Restrictions are applied to consumers. We are preparing for a rather difficult situation in the winter,” Galushchenko said.

According to the minister, Russia's goal is a complete blackout in Ukraine. Nuclear generation remains basic for Ukraine. But Russian attacks on substations pose a threat to nuclear power plants, as well as nuclear and radiation safety.

“We are preparing to ensure that all 9 NPP units operate in the winter, this is our way to survive. Therefore, an important task is to protect nuclear energy, avoid blackout of nuclear power plants and ensure nuclear and radiation safety in Ukraine, on which global nuclear safety depends,” he said.
