Georgian Parliament passed the draft law "on foreign agents" in the first reading

The Georgian parliament passed in the first reading the draft law "on foreign agents", against which mass protests were held twice. This is reported by Frontnews Georgia.

Not a single deputy voted against the adoption, 83 voted for it.

It is reported that there was no opposition in the hall, some had recently been kicked out of the meeting, others left the hall alone.

As a reminder, the draft law obliges non-governmental organizations and media outlets that receive more than 20% of their funding from abroad to register as an organization that promotes the interests of a foreign power. It is proposed to impose fines for evading registration.

The Georgian authorities claim that the law is a watered-down version of the US Foreign Agents Registration Act and that its adoption will "significantly improve the quality of public awareness."

At the same time, opponents of the law, supported by the West, claim that it was copied from Russian law and is aimed at discrediting the opposition.
