Today, the Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Mike Turner, announced a threat to US national security and called on US President Joe Biden to declassify all information on this matter. Turner did not provide an explanation of what it was about.
TV channel ABC NEWS, citing its own sources, said that the threat to US national security is the possible launch of nuclear weapons into space by Russia.
It's not about dropping these nuclear weapons on Earth, but about the possible use of them against satellites, the media explains.
However, the situation is still "worrying and very sensitive," one ABC source said, calling it "a big deal."
So far, US officials have not officially confirmed that this is a case of a possible launch of Russian nuclear weapons into space.
"We're going to work together to resolve this issue as we deal with all sensitive, classified issues," said House Speaker Mike Johnson.
Democratic Congressman Jim Himes, who is a senior member of the Intelligence Committee, called the warning about the threat to national security "important" but "not a cause for panic."
In turn, The New Tork Times, citing officials briefed on the matter, reported that the United States has informed Congress and its allies in Europe of new intelligence on Russia's nuclear capabilities that could pose an international threat.
"Officials said that the new intelligence is serious, but that this capability is still under development and Russia has not deployed it. So, they said, it does not pose a serious threat to the United States, Ukraine or America's European allies," the article says.
Citing sources, the NYT states that "the new intelligence is linked to Russia's attempts to develop a space-based anti-satellite nuclear weapon."
The article notes that Republican Michael Turner, who is considered a supporter of helping Ukraine, was the first to speak about the threat. Therefore, some officials told the publication that Turner made the noise to put pressure on the House of Representatives to pass the additional funding request for Ukraine that the Senate passed this week.
