The American president should deal with the strengthening of NATO. This was stated by National Security Council Coordinator John Kirby at a briefing.
Kirby made his comment in the context of former US President Donald Trump's recent statements about "encouraging Russia to do whatever it wants" with regard to NATO countries that, in his opinion, make insufficient defense contributions.
"Well, now you know that I will be careful. I cannot talk about what was said during the election campaign. All I can tell you is that under this particular president, President Biden, as commander-in-chief, NATO is more relevant, stronger, bigger than ever before. And he has really prioritized our network of alliances and partnerships around the world. And, of course, NATO is at the forefront when it comes to security on the European continent," Kirby said in response to a journalist's question about the White House's response to Trump's statement.
Kirby emphasized that this is exactly what the American president should be talking about: strengthening alliances and partnerships, as well as sending a strong message, especially to NATO members.
"About how seriously we take our Article Five commitments. And you've heard it from President Biden, gosh, I don't know how many times: We will defend, if necessary, every inch of NATO territory. That's what the commander-in-chief of the United States should say when it comes to NATO," John Kirby added.
