Colorado court disqualifies Trump from running in 2024, but there will be an appeal

The Colorado Supreme Court has issued an unprecedented decision that former President Donald Trump is not constitutionally eligible to run for the US presidency in 2024, The Hill reports.

For the first time in history, the court disqualified a presidential candidate under the 14th Amendment in connection with the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021, by removing his name from the voter lists in party elections (primaries) during the presidential vote.

However, the judges suspended their decision until January 4 so that Trump could appeal to the US Supreme Court, which could even keep his place on the state's ballot if the appeal is not heard quickly.

The state Supreme Court's decision applies only to Colorado, but this historic decision could affect the 2024 presidential campaign. Representatives of the state election commission said that this issue should be resolved by January 5, the deadline for the formation of the list of candidates for the Republican Party primaries scheduled for March 5.

Thus, the Colorado Supreme Court upheld the trial judge's findings that the storming of the US Capitol on January 6 was an uprising and that Trump "participated" in this uprising.

Trump's campaign has already announced that it will quickly appeal this decision to the United States Supreme Court, as well as a parallel request to suspend this "deeply undemocratic" decision.
