The US Congress passed a bill that would prohibit any president from unilaterally withdrawing from NATO. To withdraw from the North Atlantic Alliance, it will be necessary to obtain the consent of Congress. This is reported by The Hill.
"We must ensure that we protect our national interests and the security of our democratic allies," said one of the authors of the initiative, Tim Kaine (Democratic Senator).
The Hill notes that this measure is related to the possible return of Donald Trump to the White House.
"Trump, who is the favorite in the Republican presidential election, has issued controversial statements about the Alliance ahead of 2024. This has pushed NATO countries to fulfill their commitment to reach 2 percent of defense spending, easing the burden on the United States," the publication writes.
