The US Senate is expected to postpone the start of its Christmas vacation amid talks between Democrats and Republicans over US border security and aid to Ukraine, Reuters reports, citing senators.
Several lawmakers told Reuters that the Senate would return to work on Monday, December 18, postponing the holiday break. At the same time, the House of Representatives (the lower house of Congress) went on vacation on December 14, as planned.
According to Politico, Senate Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer told his colleagues that border negotiations are moving quickly enough that the recess can be postponed. The discussions are expected to continue until the end of the week and over the weekend.
As a reminder, US President Joe Biden is calling on Congress to pass an additional aid package for Ukraine and Israel, but House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Republicans are only willing to vote for the aid if it is combined with tighter controls on the US-Mexico border.
