A subway bridge in Kyiv could collapse at any moment. This threat arose because the tensioned reinforcement bundles were not properly insulated during construction. Now, in order for residents and guests of the capital to use the bridge safely, it needs to be reconstructed.
This became known from an interview with Heorhiy Rosnovsky, a well-known bridge designer and co-designer of the Kyiv Metro Bridge, with Hromadske Radio.
"This bridge was supposed to stand for 100 years, if it was properly maintained. But after 30 years, this metro bridge began to cause great concern. Because the inspection showed that there are many cracks and the reinforcement is in poor condition. Why is this happening? During construction, the two piers are pulled together with a screed that contains tensioned reinforcement bundles, so these reinforcement bundles were not properly isolated," said Heorhiy Rosnovsky.
He pointed out the mistakes of both designers and builders, emphasizing that isolation of reinforcement could have prevented damage to the elements of the reinforced concrete structure.
Rosnovsky also expressed concern about the possible collapse of the bridge at any moment, emphasizing the need for reconstruction to ensure the safety of the bridge for citizens and visitors to the capital.
