Aid to Ukraine threatened by border disputes within US, - Politico

The US Congress continues to debate the southern border and immigration legislation. They are putting aid to Ukraine at risk, Politico reports.

The publication notes that US lawmakers from the Republican Party have set conditions for Democrats to approve aid to Ukraine. It is about border security.

Republicans are threatening to withdraw aid to Ukraine if Democrats do not agree to strengthen US immigration laws. Other demands include restoring part of the wall on the border between the US and Mexico, reducing the number of people who receive a "humanitarian password" to enter the US, and making the rules for obtaining asylum for migrants more complicated.

Democrats, in turn, refuse to support such demands. The White House has also criticized proposals to link the issue of funding for Ukraine's aid to the security of the American border.

Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson emphasized this week that he supports linking funding for Ukraine to border security. And some conservatives believe that even a migration deal will not be enough to provide aid to Ukraine.

Politico believes that Ukraine has become a kind of hostage to the 30-year dispute between Republicans and Democrats over borders. The US Senate fears that this could severely delay the issue of funding for Ukraine.
