The Pentagon administration is concerned about a possible increase in the production of ammunition in the United States to simultaneously support Ukraine and Israel, CNN reports, citing its sources in the US Department of Defense.
According to the journalists, Ukraine and Israel have different needs for weapons. Ukraine needs a large amount of artillery ammunition to confront the Russian Federation, while Jerusalem has requested high-precision missiles and the Iron Dome missile defense system.
However, there is a risk that if Israel launches a ground operation in the Gaza Strip, the IDF will also need American 155-mm artillery ammunition.
According to the publication, the Pentagon has already contacted American arms manufacturers to speed up the fulfillment of current orders from Israel for military equipment.
According to the publication, in early 2023, the United States withdrew hundreds of thousands of its ammunition from Israel to transfer it to Ukraine. The Ukrainian armed forces are using thousands of artillery shells to repel the military invasion of Russian troops. However, the scale could be much larger in the event of an IDF ground operation in the Gaza Strip.
The Pentagon is also worried about the situation in Congress. It is not yet clear whether American lawmakers will support the allocation of funds to support Israel and Ukraine.
The source said that the US will expand its support for Israel, but it is important that Congress provides additional funds to respond to crises and unexpected circumstances as they arise.
