Georgian court fines Ukrainian woman for participating in rallies against Russian tourists

On Friday, the Batumi City Court imposed a fine of 2000 GEL on Ukrainian citizen Marina Chobanyan for failing to comply with the demands of law enforcement agencies during the July 31 events in Batumi port, where they protested against the entry of the Russian cruise ship Astoria Grande.

The Ukrainian citizen was detained along with more than 20 other people during the rally for non-compliance with police demands and for petty hooliganism.

"The Astoria Grande, operated by the Turkish cruise company Miray Cruises International under the Palauan flag, first entered the port of Batumi on July 27 and also became the object of protests. Representatives of the Georgian Dream party claim that the protests were "organized" by the "radical wing" of the domestic opposition, calling the reaction "impolite."

Russia lifted travel and visa restrictions with Georgia after its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The international community, in turn, disapproved of Tbilisi's decision to accept the lifting of restrictions.
