A group of hackers has been spying on officials of the embassies of four countries in Belarus for many years, including during the war in Ukraine.
This is stated in a report by security researchers from the Slovakian company ESET, which specializes in cybersecurity, Reuters reports.
It is noted that approximately 15 devices belonging to diplomats from the embassies of two European countries, as well as one each from South Asia and Africa, have been the targets of cyberattacks. Thus, according to the research, the digital espionage campaign began around 2021 and continues till today.
The report indicates that hackers hacked into their victims, probably at the level of the Internet provider, which made it possible to trick them into downloading malware. It is not yet known how many diplomats have fallen victim to this campaign. However, the study, which reveals a "new and improved hacking collective" allegedly operating from Belarus, shows how vulnerable diplomats can be to cyber espionage.
According to Bill Marchak of the Internet watchdog group Citizen Lab, it is difficult to avoid attacks by this kind of hackers.
