The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine admits that hackers managed to find vulnerabilities in the code of the agency's website

On February 15, the official website of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry was subjected to an unprecedented DDoS attack, which was aimed at maximizing the load on the server capacities on which the site operates, the Defense Ministry's press service reported.

"The attackers must have known that the site was protected against classic DDoS attacks, so they resorted to looking for vulnerabilities in the code of the site itself. We can state that, unfortunately, they succeeded," the report says.

It is specified that the specialists of the Ministry of Defense with the support of all entities involved in ensuring cybersecurity, carried out the configuration of additional protection and carried out some technical work to restore the normal functioning of the web portal.

"We were also offered support by U.S. partners, providing technical advice and additional protection services, which once again confirms the political agreements on cooperation in cybersecurity that were reached back in November 2021," the DOD said.

They add that before resuming the work of the site, the specialists of the department "found out the reasons for the failure of its functioning, coordinated their actions with the National Committee of the National Security and Defence Council, the Security Service, the State Security Service, as well as with the specialists of other structures, also attacked.

"Such a cyber attack on the website of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine gave us the opportunity to strengthen the cyber defense of the site and establish close cooperation both with foreign partners and between colleagues from different Ukrainian departments. The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, without excessive tragedy, but with prudence, realizes that attacks will continue and will sometimes cause temporary disruption to its work, at least until the site is professionally updated. Updates to the site's software are planned and will take place as planned," the agency summarized.

As reported, on Tuesday, February 15, in Ukraine were observed failures in the work of the official site of the Defense Ministry and the AFU, as well as the services of two state banks.
