The US ambassador called the cancellation of visas and the ban on flights from the Russian Federation to Georgia a "gift from the aggressor"

US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan commented on the decision of the Russian Federation to cancel the visa regime for Georgian citizens and ban flights to the country.

Her statement is quoted by the Georgian Channel One.

"I don't know why anyone should welcome a gesture, a gift from a country that is a brutal aggressor," Degnan said.

The American diplomat emphasized that this is a very important issue.

"I have not seen information about which airlines have been granted the right to operate flights. This is important in order to establish whether they are under sanctions or not. There are security problems. If they are sanctioned, they have problems with parts, service , it's a legitimate concern in connection with security issues that need to be taken into account," she said.

On May 10, Russian President Vladimir Putin canceled the visa regime for Georgian citizens and at the same time lifted the ban on flights of Russian airlines to Georgia.

Earlier it became known that already this week the Russian airline "Azimut" and the Georgian Georgian Airways plan to launch flights from Moscow to Tbilisi.

Representatives of the official Tbilisi welcomed Moscow's decision and explained it as the interests of Georgian citizens who live on the territory of Russia and who had difficulties coming to their homeland.
