Britain summoned the Russian ambassador because of the verdict of oppositionist Kara-Murza

The British Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian ambassador Andriy Kelin. The reason for this was the verdict of the Moscow court against the oppositionist Volodymyr Kara-Murza, who has, in particular, British citizenship.

This was announced in a statement published on the website of the British government.

"Great Britain has summoned the Russian ambassador following the politically motivated conviction and sentence in a Moscow court of Volodymyr Kara-Murza, who holds British and Russian citizenship," the statement said.

As explained in the department, this makes it clear that Great Britain considers the conviction of Kara-Murza to be contrary to Russia's international obligations regarding human rights, including the right to a fair trial.

It is indicated that Great Britain has already imposed sanctions on the judge who presided over the trial for involvement in human rights violations and will consider further measures to bring to justice those involved in the detention and ill-treatment of Volodymyr Kara-Murza.

What is known about the case

Volodymyr Kara-Murza is an opposition politician, journalist and human rights defender in Russia.

Previously, they tried to poison him twice, Kara-Murza was arrested and imprisoned by the Russian regime in April 2022. He was accused of spreading so-called "fakes" about the Russian army, as well as "treason". Today he was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

At the same time, the Moscow court imposed a fine of 400,000 rubles on Kara-Murza and prohibited her from engaging in journalistic activities for seven years after her release.

The accusations were based on the politician's speech in the Arizona House of Representatives and participation in a round table at the Sakhariv Center. Kara-Murza's "state treason" was seen in speeches in Lisbon, Oslo and Washington.
