Poland requests Berlin's consent to transfer MiG-29s from East German warehouses to Ukraine

Poland has sent an official request to Berlin for the transfer of MiG-29 fighters from the former German Democratic Republic to Ukraine.

This is reported by dpa with reference to sources in the government.

These are fighters that were in service in the former German Democratic Republic during the Cold War and were inherited by the Bundeswehr, and in 2002 Germany sold them to Poland.

Then 23 aircraft were sold to Warsaw. Advisor to the President of Poland, Jacek Pynoczy, said at the end of March that the Polish Air Force remained in service with about a dozen of them.

Since almost all German contracts for the sale of weapons stipulate that further transfer or resale requires the approval of Berlin, Poland must obtain German consent to transfer the fighter jets to Ukraine.
